  What is the FreeStyle Navigator™ Continuous Glucose Monitor?

It is a miniaturized subcutaneous sensor designed for easy insertion under the skin by the user to continuously monitor glucose levels. The FreeStyle Navigator™ Continuous Glucose Monitor is intended to provide immediate results while also storing the results for future analysis. Because it is a wireless system, the handheld meter that displays glucose levels can be conveniently carried in a pocket, purse or left on a bed stand at night.

This device is designed to accurately and discreetly measure glucose levels without the recurring pain and hassle of conventional, invasive blood glucose testing. It is intended to replace traditional blood glucose testing in the self-management of diabetes.
   
  When will the FreeStyle Navigator™ Continuous Glucose Monitor be available for purchase?

This product is currently being developed and will not be available until marketing clearance is obtained from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
   
   
   How much will the system cost?

We expect that the ongoing costs of our continuous glucose monitoring device will be comparable to conventional meters and test strips currently available.
   
  Will I need a prescription to buy the product?

Because it is a new and innovative method for glucose measurement, it is likely to be a prescription-controlled product.
 
  Will the product be reimbursable?

It is our belief that the system will be reimbursable, but this is yet to be determined and will depend largely upon the feedback of people with diabetes, healthcare professionals, manufacturers and government agencies.
   
  Is the FreeStyle Navigator™ Continuous Glucose Monitor non-invasive?

Our product currently in development is minimally invasive. TheraSense's continuous glucose monitoring sensor involves easy insertion of a miniaturized sensor just under the skin by the user.
   
   Does it measure blood glucose or interstitial fluid glucose?

It measures interstitial fluid glucose.
     
  Are there wires between the sensor and the handheld meter/information display unit?

The system is being developed as a wireless system. A transmitter designed to be worn on the abdomen, upper arm or alternative site will send data to the meter through radio frequency.
   
   
  Does it use test strips?

It does not use test strips but rather a miniaturized sensor designed to be easily inserted just under the skin by the user and worn for several days.
   
  How is the sensor inserted?

There is a simple spring-loaded device designed to quickly and easily insert the miniaturized sensor just under the surface of the skin with little or no discomfort.
   
 How long can I wear the sensor?

We are designing the sensor to be worn for several days.
     
  Will I be able to wear the sensor in the shower, when swimming or during other physical activities?

We are designing the product to accommodate a range of normal physical activities.
     
  How far can the meter be from the transmitter to receive glucose readings?

We are designing the product so that the handheld meter can be up to 10 feet from the transmitter. This ensures convenience for carrying the small-sized meter in a pocket, handbag, backpack, on a belt or for placing it on a nightstand while sleeping.
   
  How frequently will one receive a glucose reading?

We are designing the product to provide a new reading every minute from the sensor which can be viewed on demand at anytime.

  Will it have an alarm for low and high glucose?

We are designing the product to provide low and high alarms to be set at a level determined by the patient and their healthcare professional. The design also includes projected alarms to indicate impending hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia conditions.
   
  Will I have to calibrate the continuous glucose monitor?

To ensure the accuracy and precision of the continuous glucose monitoring device, calibration will be performed approximately on a daily basis using the integrated FreeStyle® meter technology

Tekstissä kerrottiin markkinoille (joskus lähitulevaisuudessa) tulevasta, esim olkavarteen kinnitettävästä vs. mittarista, joka on suunniteltu korvaamaan perinteiset mittarit. Pääidea oli, että laite tunkeutuu ihon alle aivan minimalistisesti, eikä valmistajan mukaan siis aiheuta juuri lainkaan kipua. Tuloksen, joka mitataan plasmasta, mittari lähettää radioteitse erilliseen vastaanottimeen(kulkee vaikkapa taskussa)esimerkiksi minuutin välein. Tulokset voidaan säilyttää myöhempää purkamista varten. Laite on suunniteltu niin, että sitä voi kantaa kerrallaan useita päiviä ja se kestää mukana vaikapa liikuntasuoritusten aikana. Laitteessa ei ole testiliuskoja, vaan muutamien päivien välein vaihdettavat "sensorit", joiden takia käyttökustannukset lienevät nykyisten menetelmien luokkaa. Ilmoittaa haluttaessa matalista/korkeista arvoista. Amerikkalaisille tarkoitetussa tekstissä ei kerrota, milloin tuote tulisi euroopan markkinoille.Tällä hetkellä on haettu hyväksyntää USA:ssa, eli ei vielä sielläkään saatavilla.

Eli toisin kuin nykyiset mittarit jotka mittaavat kokoverestä tai plasmasta, niin tämä mittaa kudosnesteestä. Onko se sitten millainen arvo verrattuna veri/plasma-mittauksiin, tätä juttu ei kerro.
